Never Buy New. In fact Never Buy Anything of Value.

I know I've blogged about this before. We must be the most dense couple to think with having kids everything you buy will stay pristine and beautiful. Any idea where this is going? Last night Damien took a yellow colored pencil to our new 50 inch Plasma TV. Luckily I was watching Nip/Tuck when I came out of my zone on Christian (ahhhhh...) to see him put the pencil on the screen to scribble. I screamed "no Damien don't!!!" He threw it and took off running. Oh of course Daddy knew with that kinda scream it meant "kid doing damage" so he came flying from the basement demanding to know what had happened. I hadn't even surveyed the damage because I KNEW if Dave had heard he was going to flip out if he saw. Well he ran over to his baby and there's some lovely yellow scribbled on the plastic circle base part but just a few little scratch type marks on the screen. I was able to wash the yellow off the base but you can still see light lines from his scribbling. Dominic did this with the old 60 inch using the whole screen but with a watercolor marker so I was able to get it all off. We noticed while next to the TV and entertainment center we now have small knicks of wood missing and a scratch already too. I'm guessing this is from the hotwheel cars Damien is always throwing around.

Anyone else have little artists using expensive things as their canvas or destroying furniture?

I can remember my parents saying "This is why we can't have nice things!!" I never understood that until I had my own kids. My 3year old loves to color the couch. We have coloring books so I am not quite sure why the couch is the favorite target. AHH the joys of parenting.

My daughter got a Sharpi and went to town on the DVD collection, my comforter, and herself. We bought our couch a little over a year ago and it's already saggy, covered in stains and looks like crap. I hear ya...I DO!!!

My daughter wo was 5 at the time scratched with a seashell hers, her sisters and her brothers names in the front of all the dresser drawers on the dresser in her room. I hadn't even finished paying for it. I was livid and she spent the rest of the day in her room for fear I would strangle her. She still has the dresser in her room and it still has all the names on it.

My little guy took crayon to the foot stool. The foot stool is cream colored with a flower pattern. Anyway, I still have blue crayon marks on it, even after having it professionally cleaned!

My mother still tells the story of how my brother colored on the wood wainscotting in the family room. She scrubbed at that FOREVER. She claims that she can still see those crayon marks to this day. This piece of history happened around 20 years ago so I know that the memories of these sorts of things last a long time.

OMG! I can so relate. We have a small television (flat screen type) that was sitting on a table. My daughter used to cover it with stickers/playdoh/spaghetti...whatever, you name it. I finally hired someone to hang it on our wall. It is now officially out of kid reach. Ahhhh...

Our problem is that they liked to put their hands on the TV. It's a large screen and their little hands fit in perfectly with any character on the screen. We finally got them past that stage and I hope we're done with it... except when the nephew comes over and runs himself into the TV.

But we've said the same thing so many times about buying something new or of value only to see it damaged/destroyed.

That sounds JUST like my boys! My 4 year old has colored all over his bedroom walls. He's also gotten to most of the inside doors in our house and quite a bit of the trim. We put our new TV up where the kids can't reach it. It makes it a little hard to watch, but at least they won't destroy it! LOL
